In Japan, in order to work towards the promotion of the utilization of biomass energy, the government has initiated The Nippon Comprehensive Biomass Strategy with the intention of developing it formally. The government has great hopes of expanding group biomass power generation from waste material and making it a central part of its energy and environmental policies. However, power generation from woody biomass involves prohibitively high collection and transportation costs and this is the factor impeding development on a scale large enough to be cost-effective.
The "Carbonizing Fusion and Gasifying Power Generation System", jointly developed by the Central Research Institute of Electric Power Industry (CRIEPI) and OKADORA Co. Ltd, is a ground-breaking power generation system which permits the simultaneous use of the woody group biomass and municipal waste group biomass (including kitchen garbage), which is obviously plentiful within the collection areas of all municipalities. By this method a high efficiency of power generation can be achieved, even at minor-scale facilities.
